Defoort/Turner/Thys/Black is the cooperation of two Belgians and two Americans. The quartet, made up of pianist Kris Defoort, tenor sax player Mark Turner, bass player Nic Thys and percussionist Jim Black have in common that they all played with master Lee Konitz in the past. Not long ago, Mark Turner released his debut album with Warner Music after having been active with veterans like James Moody and Jimmy Smith. But the others also gained their experience with big names. The cum laude Hilversum conservatory alumnus Nic Thys took private lessons with bass players Marc Johnson and Dave Holland. He toured with trumpet player Benny Bailey and has frequently shared the stage with Toots Thielemans and Kenny Werner. Kris Defoort is known as the bandleader of his ensemble Dreamtime in Belgium and as a famous composer. And drummer Jim Black provides rhythms for very different groups, varying from Dave Douglas' Tiny Bell trio to Uri Caine's Mahler and Bach projects.
