The 18-headed Dutch Jazz Orchestra conducted by conductor/arranger John Ruocco is one of those prominent documenting jazz orchestras, intensively researching certain composers and shedding new light on jazz history with old scores. Thus under the working-title Something To Live For the DJO is researching the works of Billy Strayhorn, the gifted composer/arranger who stayed in the background. The story goes that Strayhorn wrote at least one piece a week during the thirty years he worked with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Recently the DJO released a compilation box with original arrangements and compositions of Strayhorn. This presentation coincided with the publication of the thesis of musicologist Walter van Leur (published at Oxford University Press), with whom the DJO has digged up these imagined as lost works. The pieces were specially composed and arranged for the weekly radio broadcast of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. The series of CDs can be categorized: the Strayhorn arrangements which were never recorded, important pieces by the composer and the adaptation of standards.
