Roy Haynes is often called 'the father of modern drumming' and that means that celebrities such as Elvin Jones, Tony Williams and Jack DeJohnette have picked up some tricks from Haynes. Haynes himself learned the art from bebop pioneers such as Kenny Clarke, Max Roach and hardbopper Art Blakey. Haynes is a man who has done it all; he has played with Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and on and on. New jazz stars like Chick Corea and Pat Metheny also knew how to find him. Currently, Haynes' resume is such that he can pick the youthful stars from the sky. At North Sea Jazz he will perform with Kenny Garrett, the most sonorous alt saxophone player of the last decade, and Nicholas Payton, the trumpet player who is often mentioned simultaneously with masters like Wynton Marsalis.
