North Sea Jazz presents line up 2013
The program also includes a large number of special projects including Ron Carter with the WDR Big Band. Also the Metropole Orkest will give two special performances. On Saturday together with the vocalists Anthony Hamilton, Gregory Porter and Gretchen Parlato led by Jules Buckley, and on Sunday the orchestra plays with jazz legend Herbie Hancock directed by Vince Mendoza.
Unfortunately the previously announced concert of Joe Jackson and the Bigger Band featuring Regina Carter has been canceled as their entire tour is off.
This year, the festival has no artist in residence but Steve Coleman and John Zorn were inivited to host their own evening.
Steve Coleman curates
On Friday North Sea Jazz organizers gave composer, bandleader and saxophonist Steve Coleman carte blanche to fi ll a night in the Madeira. The reason for this is the huge influence he still has on jazz music and artists of today. During this evening Jonathan Finlayson & Sicilian Defense, Doug Hammond Quintet, Citizen X ft. Jean-Paul Bourelly en Steve Coleman & Five Elements will take the stage.
Zorn at 60
Jack-of-all-trades John Zorn has turned 60 and celebrates with a special marathon consisting of various projects from his scene. For his full evening program in the Darling he brings Song Project, Illuminations, Holy Visions & The Alchemist, Templars, The Dreamers and Electric Masada with him.
During the festival there's special focus on new developments with the themes Jazz Rocks!, Electronic Jazz & Future Soul, New Urban Jazz and Improfs.
Jazz Rocks!
For a number of years now, we have seen a beautiful development in jazz mu-sic. A new generation of young artists, aged somewhere between twenty and thirty, that
combines jazz music with rock, funk, soul and more. This yields a present-day trend of fusion bands with a fresh new sound. Three of those groups who have never played before at North Sea Jazz are: BadBadNotGood, Dirty Loops and Snarky Puppy.
Electronic Jazz & Future Soul
The funky beats, slow swing and complex rhythms of both jazz and salsa are popular with both currents DJs and other sound artists with laptop and various electronics. At the festival a number of notable projects of the past year: Mala in Cuba, Frente Cumbiero in collaboration with Quantic, and Thundercat. And the new soul voices of Laura Mvula and Hiatus Kaiyote.
New Urban Jazz
A younger generation of jazz musicians that grew up with urban music as soul, R & B and hip hop. They are all true jazz musi-cians who have assimilated all these influences from their youth in a new jazz style. Chris Dave & The Drumhedz, Next Collective, Jose James and Robert Glasper Experiment with special guest Lionel Loueke are some fine examples.
Improfs
On Sundau, Madeira is the stage for improvised music, with legends of this scene from all over the world including the Dutch ICP Orchestra and the Brazilian Hermeto Pascoal. Of the young generation: Colin Stetson (USA) and Zapp4 (Netherlands).
